UCI’s Baker to Take Part in Charity Benefit Tonight

Rod Baker, UC Irvine men’s basketball coach, is scheduled to participate in a benefit to raise funds to fight juvenile diabetes at 6 tonight at the Westin South Coast Plaza hotel.

Baker will model a tuxedo for auction at the event sponsored by the Orange County Chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation. A champagne reception and dinner proceeds the auction. Tickets are $125 per person and all proceeds will go to charity. More information: (714) 553-0363.

Michelle Halliday of Fullerton College has signed a letter of intent to play for the Cal State Fullerton women’s volleyball team.

Halliday, a middle blocker, was voted the co-most valuable player in the Orange Empire Conference this season. She is a La Habra High graduate.

Stacy Silva, a first baseman at Cypress High School, signed a letter of intent to play softball at Long Beach State. Silva was a three-time all-league player at Cypress.

Santa Margarita golfer Kelly Craig, the 1995 Sea View League individual champion, has signed a letter of intent to attend Pepperdine. Craig helped the Eagles to the 1996 Southern Section team title.

Laurie Osuna, captain of the swimming team at Canyon High, has signed with Cal State Northridge. Osuna’s best times are 24.90 seconds in the 50 freestyle and 54.90 in the 100 freestyle.

Koo Kim, a guard at Costa Mesa, has accepted an appointment to the the preparatory school for the Air Force Academy. She plans to play women’s basketball.

Kim, an All-Pacific Coast League first-team player, averaged 14.3 points and four assists for the Mustangs last year.
