500th Game for Baumgartner

Enforcer Ken Baumgartner played his 500th NHL game and recorded only his 41st career point with the second assist on Garry Valk’s second-period goal that gave the Ducks a 2-1 lead Sunday.

Of course, Baumgartner has never been asked to score goals or make flashy passes. He has, however, compiled 1,803 penalty minutes in a fight-filled career.

“It’s a proud moment to play in my 500th game in this role,” said Baumgartner, whose first NHL game was with the Kings in January, 1988.

“I’m looking forward to playing No. 600. It was nice to get an assist in a winning cause.”

Last week’s trade that brought left wing Brian Bellows to the Ducks from Tampa Bay has pushed Roman Oksiuta out of the lineup. Oksiuta was scratched for the third consecutive game Sunday.

Bellows has yet to record a point in three games with the Ducks, but has been far more effective than Oksiuta in creating scoring chances in front of the opposing net.

Oksiuta also has been slowed recently by a sprained ankle, Coach Ron Wilson said.

Defenseman Jason Marshall was cut on the tip of his right pinky about five minutes into the second period and did not return to the game. His status is day-to-day. . . . Winger Ted Drury assisted on Valk’s second-period goal, his first point since scoring a goal against San Jose on Oct. 18.
