Share

Residents are invited to join in Cal Lutheran University’s Dec. 14 celebration of Kwanzaa.

The traditional holiday celebration, which honors family, community and the culture of African Americans, will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Preus-Brandt Forum, 60 W. Olsen Road, Thousand Oaks.

Kwanzaa, observed from Dec. 26 through New Year’s Day, is based on seven guiding principles: unity, self-determination, collective work and responsibility, purpose, creativity, cooperative economics and faith.

Cal Lutheran’s one-day event will include singing, dancing, music, poetry readings and lectures on African American culture and traditional beliefs. A karamu feast of traditional African foods and ceremonies honoring ancestors will also be part of the celebration.
