University Knocks Off Mt. Carmel With Late Flurry

University outscored San Diego Mt. Carmel, 17-2, in the late going to win, 90-86, in a Century High boys’ basketball tournament game Monday.

Mt. Carmel led, 84-73, with 2 minutes 45 seconds left. University took the lead, 87-86, on a three-pointer by Eric Palmer with 40 seconds left.

Palmer, a junior guard, finished with 30 points, including 12 in the fourth quarter. He made 15 of 18 free throws.

Justin Hunt added 10 points, including six of the final 10 in the game for University.

Larry Johnson, a freshman forward, had 18 points and 10 rebounds also for University (1-1).

In other Century tournament games:

Century 71, El Monte 53--Chris Lopez scored 22 points and Ricky Lopez added 21, including three three-pointers, to lead Century (2-1).

Dana Hills 77, Magnolia 57--Huber Souza scored a game-high 29 points for Dana Hills. Reid Speigl added 13 points for the Dolphins (2-1). Erik McGhee led Magnolia (3-2) with 16 points.

In the Trabuco Hills Converse Classic:

Lynwood 64, Esperanza 63--Dan Gaulden’s field goal attempt fell short at the buzzer and Esperanza lost to Lynwood (3-3) in pool play. Esperanza rallied in the fourth quarter to pull within one after being down 53-42 at the beginning of the quarter.

Steve Gaulden scored 16 points for the Aztecs.

In the Costa Mesa tournament:

Los Amigos 47, Saddleback 31--Mike Wahl made five three-pointers and finished with 24 points and John Valenzuela added 13 for Los Amigos (1-2).

Costa Mesa 46, Santiago 44--Roven Sou scored 18 points in Costa Mesa’s first victory of the season. The Mustangs are 1-4.

In the Fullerton tournament:

Brethren Christian 45, La Mirada 42--Trailing 42-40 with less than two minutes to play, Dan Muilenburg (16 points) made two free throws to tie the score, 42-42. With under a minute left, Jacob Brown gave Brethren Christian (4-1) a two-point lead and Muilenburg sealed the victory hitting the front end of a one and one.

Fullerton 74, Bolsa Grande 37--Brandon Rosenthal scored 14 points and freshman Michael Davern added 10 for host Fullerton (1-1), which outscored Bolsa Grande, 20-3, in the first quarter.

In the La Quinta tournament:

Huntington Beach 51, Laguna Beach 45--Chris Basich scored 16 points and Ravi Brahmbhatt added 11, as Huntington Beach rallied from an five point halftime deficit.

Katella 33, La Quinta 32--Kenny Moreno and Edgar Garcia each scored eight points for Katella.

In nonleague games:

Kennedy 54, Rancho Alamitos 30--Sophomore forward Tony Jimmerson had 14 points, nine rebounds and five steals for Kennedy (4-1).

Aliso Niguel 76, Corona del Mar 55--Jeff Munsell scored 17 points in a victory for Aliso Niguel (3-2). Nathan Hair scored 16 points for the Wolverines.

Orangewood Academy 70, Long Beach St. Anthony 68--Joey Oswald made a three-pointer as time ran out to give Orangewood Academy the victory over St. Anthony (2-3).

In the Brea Olinda girls’ tournament:

Brea Olinda 97, Ontario 18--Erin Kelly scored 15 second-half points in the first-round game. Stephanie Wettlin scored 16 points for the Ladycats (1-0).

Mission Viejo 54, Temple City 53--Tami Higham, who had 27 points, scored with 25 seconds left to give Mission Viejo (4-0) a one-point lead.

In the Downey Calvary Chapel tournament:

Liberty Christian 34, Tri-City Christian 31--Stephanie Wu made three of four shots in the fourth quarter to lead Liberty Christian (3-0).

In the Marie Upton Classic:

Cypress 48, Torrance 39--Stacy Silva and Michelle Mitchell each scored eight points for Cypress (2-1).

In the South Coast Classic:

La Jolla The Bishop’s 43, Valencia 33--Trish Christian scored 12 points in a consolation loss for Valencia (0-4).

Anaheim 47, Los Amigos 37--Darlene Tu’ua scored 21 points to lead Anaheim (1-2).

Cypress 3, Western 1--Chris Duperrut scored three goals and Mike Meza had two assists for Cypress (4-1).

Corona del Mar 12, Laguna Hills 8--Meagan Hardt scored eight goals in the season opener for Corona del Mar (1-0).
