Kim Mortensen of UCLA, who set a national high school record in the girls’ 3,200-meter run for Thousand Oaks High in May, has been selected as Track & Field News magazine’s national female athlete of the year.

In addition to setting a national high school record of 9 minutes 48.59 seconds in the 3,200 at the Southern Section Masters Meet, the undefeated Mortensen ran 9:52.80, the second-fastest clocking to win the state title.

The Kennedy High boys’ soccer team will forfeit two victories and a tie it earned at the Burroughs tournament last weekend because it used an ineligible player, Coach Fred Singer said Tuesday.

Greg Avila, a junior midfielder cleared only for junior varsity competition by the City Section Rules Committee, played in the three varsity matches and converted a penalty kick in a 1-0 victory over Valencia.

Avila, who resides in the Kennedy attendance area, attended Chaminade the last two years and transferred to Kennedy this fall.

Last Thursday, the rules committee decided Avila had transferred for financial reasons and denied his request of a waiver to Rule 214 regarding transfer eligibility.

Ice Lincoln, one the Cal State Northridge women’s basketball team’s prized recruits, will not join the team until next fall, Coach Michael Abraham said.

Lincoln, a 6-3 forward from Santa Monica City College, was not eligible to play until she earned her Associate of Arts degree.

Abraham hoped to have her for Northridge’s game Saturday at San Jose State, but he says he will wait until next year.

Northridge will add Bambi Bowling, a 5-10 forward, to its roster and starting lineup. Bowling sat out a year after transferring from New Mexico last season.

Outfielder Chris Fick was selected by the San Francisco Giants in the triple-A phase of the Rule 5 major league draft Monday.

Fick, who attended Cal Lutheran and Newbury Park High, batted .257 with 19 home runs and 75 runs batted in last season for Arkansas in the Texas League.
