A 14-year-old gang member has been arrested on attempted murder charges after he allegedly doused two 11-year-old Long Beach boys with rubbing alcohol and set them on fire, authorities reported Sunday.

One child suffered third-degree burns over 25% of his body, said Battalion Chief Jack Bender of the Long Beach Fire Department, which is investigating the case. The boy was listed in stable condition at Torrance Memorial Medical Center.

Firefighters said the flames went out on the other boy’s clothes before they could cause any injury.

The attack occurred at about 7:40 p.m. Saturday as the boys were playing in the 1000 block of Orizaba Avenue, near their homes. Bender said the 14-year-old suspect sprayed one of them with rubbing alcohol and set him on fire before chasing the other youth and igniting his clothes as well.
