Twelve San Fernando Valley residents will be honored for their community contributions during a ceremony Wednesday night at Northridge Fashion Center.

The hourlong event, scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. in Center Court, will feature appearances by City Councilman Hal Bernson, KNBC-TV Channel 4 weatherman Christopher Nance and the San Fernando Valley Youth Community Choir.

The ceremony caps a fund-raising drive for seven area charities: Haven Hills, Volunteer Center of the Assistance League, Police Activity League Supporters (PALS), Meet Each Need with Dignity (MEND), San Fernando Valley Child Guidance Clinic, Children of the Night and City of Hope.

The charities have been selling battery-powered candles and lamps, and encouraging local residents to display them as a show of support. Sales will continue until Wednesday evening. Charities that sell their entire supply of candles and lamps will earn $2,500, organizers said. Candles sell for $3 each, and lamps for $5.

“Charities usually can’t afford a really big fund-raiser,” said Keith Fenimore, spokesman for the event. “This year they wanted to come up with something that would affect the community and also make a good amount of money.”

The evening’s honorees include a police officer, school and anti-violence activists, and charity volunteers.
