City to Buy 22 Acres in $650,000 Deal

Urged by residents, the Laguna Beach City Council has agreed to buy 22 acres along Laguna Canyon Road.

“I say, let’s go for it,” Open Space Commissioner Marvin Johnson said, nudging council members toward the unanimous vote at their meeting this week. Leaders of environmental and open space groups were on hand to support the purchase.

The city will spend $650,000 for the land, site of a former riding stable. Some of the money will be used for additional expenses, such as removing old buildings at the site.

The property, which has a stream running through it and is ideal for hiking, is located just south of El Toro Road across from an entrance to the Laguna Coast Wilderness Park.

City Manager Kenneth C. Frank said funding for the purchase could come partly from state money originally intended to buy a Laguna Canyon parcel that is no longer for sale.
