Third-Ranked Woodbridge Rides Early Lead to Victory

Third-ranked Woodbridge used a first-quarter run to defeat University, 89-66, in the semifinals of the Irvine World News Tournament Friday at Concordia. Woodbridge went on a 15-3 run and had an 11-point lead with three minutes left in the quarter.

The Warriors play Capistrano Valley in the championship final at 7 tonight. The Trojans fell to 5-4.

Brandon Beeson scored 31 points and had 10 rebounds for Woodbridge. Chris Burgess scored 28 points and had 16 rebounds for the Warriors (7-1).

In the other semifinal game:

Capistrano Valley 60, Irvine 54--Capistrano Valley (4-3) jumped to a 20-9 lead in the first quarter, en route to its fourth straight victory. Dan Galvanoni scored 18 points and Ryan Thurlow had 14 for Capistrano Valley. John Fudge scored 17 points and Ted Miley added 14 for Irvine (5-4).

In consolation games:

Dana Hills 59, Pomona 42--Todd Pittman scored 11 points to lead eighth-ranked Dana Hills (7-2). Jerry Green scored a game-high 18 points for Pomona (4-).

Fountain Valley 55, La Habra 51--Todd Daniels scored 13 points in a consolation victory for Fountain Valley.

Huntington Beach 59, Paramount 42--Nick Sinclair and Chris Basich each scored 18 points in a consolation victory for Huntington Beach (16-2).

Kennedy 53, Los Amigos 31--Aaron Lewis scored 11 points to advance Kennedy (8-2) to today’s consolation championship against Huntington Beach. Michael Wahl scored a game-high 12 points for Los Amigos (4-4).

Palos Verdes Chadwick 61, Estancia 57--After falling behind, 22-7, in the first quarter, Estancia (6-3) battled back, outscoring Palos Verdes Chadwick, 50-39, in the final three quarters.

West Covina 41, Sunny Hills 39--Steve Swagerty scored 14 points and Daren Solomon had eight for Sunny Hills (2-6). Juwan Carter led all scorers with 15 points for West Covina (2-4).
