Loyola Marymount Loses Sixth in a Row

Mark Sanford had eight points, a steal and an assist during a decisive second-half run as Washington defeated Loyola Marymount, 85-60, on Monday night.

Washington took a 68-41 lead with 10 minutes left as Sanford sparked a 19-2 run with a layup, two dunks and two free throws.

The Lions managed only one basket over seven minutes.

Donald Watts scored 19 points, Deon Luton 14 and Sanford 13 for the Huskies (6-1).

Kenny Hotopp scored a career-high 18 points and Tim Kennedy added 16 for the Lions (2-7).

Washington led throughout as the Lions lost their sixth game in a row.

Kennedy and Hotopp scored four points apiece during a 10-2 run that brought the Lions to within 51-39 less than five minutes into the second half before Sanford paced Washington’s decisive run.

Watts scored five points as Washington took early command during a 12-2 run late in the first half.

The Huskies made seven three-point shots in the first half, including two each by Watts and Jamie Booker, to take a 45-29 halftime lead.

“We wanted to force them to make the perimeter shots and take away their inside game,” Loyola Coach John Olive said. “They are a dominating inside team. Their emphasis is to get the ball inside. We wanted to try to take away that emphasis, and we did a decent job of that early, but they shot the heck out of the ball.”
