Habitat House to Be Framed on Saturday

Share

Weather permitting, volunteers will gather Saturday to frame a house being built by Habitat for Humanity of Ventura County for the Jose Flores family of the Ojai Valley.

The 60 volunteers participating in the “blitz framing” will put up the framework for the house’s walls and put the roof trusses and initial plywood on the building, “so that at the end of the day, it will look like a house,” said Duane Wikholm, the project committee chairman.

The foundation for the home was poured about a month ago, Wikholm said, after six months of grading and putting in specialized drainage for the Mahoney Avenue site in Oak View. Likening the framing to an old-fashioned barn raising, Wikholm said that six crews will each take a different part of the house to complete the job in one day.

According to the project’s volunteer coordinator Judy Pewter, there are still openings for those interested in helping, especially people who have construction skills. Volunteers are also needed for the later stages of construction, including putting in electrical wiring.

“There’s still a lot of work to go on this house,” Pewter said.

If it rains Saturday, the framing will be postponed until Jan. 4. Those interested in volunteering can call Pewter at 646-7807.
