Verbum Dei 81, Canoga Park 66--The Hunters were caught off guard by the Eagles’ up-tempo style of play and fell behind 7-0 with one minute 30 seconds gone in the first quarter.

“That was all she wrote,” Canoga Park Coach Ralph Turner said. “They surprised us, but what surprised me even more was how we responded. That’s our game and we should have come right back at them but we gave a half-effort.”

The Hunters pulled to within 49-43 with 4:22 to play in the third quarter, but Verbum Dei finished the quarter with a 13-0 run. Canoga Park did not make a field goal in 10 attempts during that stretch.

Carloes Harper scored 31 points for the Hunters, who made just three of 19 three-point attempts. David Redmond added 15 points.

Morningside 97, Bell-Jeff 62--Ruben Douglas scored 32 points on 11-of-21 shooting, but Bell-Jeff was routed.

Artesia 81, Burbank 56--The Bulldogs fell behind, 30-4, after one quarter and did not get closer than 20 points the rest of the game.

Juni Williams had 20 points and Steve Silvera added 12 for the Bulldogs.

Harvard-Westlake 79, Long Beach Poly (JV) 32--All but two players scored for the second-seeded Wolverines (11-1), who cruised against a junior varsity team added to fill the tournament.

Jarron Collins had 13 points, including two three-point baskets, despite playing only 13 minutes. Jason Collins added eight points and six rebounds in 12 minutes. Reserve forward Dan Karubian had 11 points.

Wolverine guard Rico Cabrera re-injured a sprained ankle.

In the Chaminade tournament:

Chaminade 74, Malibu 63--Justin Stewart and Cayce Cook each scored 21 points for the Eagles (6-3). Cook also had seven assists and seven steals.

St. Monica 67, Rio Mesa 60--Ken Forney had 14 points and Farhaad Azimi added 13 points and eight rebounds, but the Spartans lost in overtime.

North Hollywood 41, Banning 40--DeJon Lee made a free throw with four seconds left for his only point to lift the Huskies.

North Hollywood (6-5) trailed throughout the first three quarters before tying the score at 36. Keron Wilkerson led the Huskies in scoring with 20 points.

Camarillo 53, El Camino Real 46--Justin Beach scored 18 points and three other players each had nine for the Scorpions (5-3). Hasan Hoke had 16 points and six rebounds for El Camino Real.

Chatsworth 48, Bloomington 46--Richard Harrison’s layup with two seconds left in regulation tied the game and the Chancellors (5-3) won in overtime.

Harrison, who finished with 10 points, scored four in the extra quarter. Montae McFarland led Chatsworth with 12 points.

In the Hart tournament:

Simi Valley 73, Notre Dame 40--The Pioneers (8-0) outscored the Knights, 16-2, in the first quarter. Simi Valley shot 54.5% for the game, led by by Brett Michel (22 points, 10 rebounds) and Branduinn Fullove (20 points).

Also for the Pioneers, Rafael Berumen had 18 points and 11 rebounds, and Ronnie Noel had 13 assists and six steals. Nobody for Notre Dame (7-4) scored in double figures.

Cleveland 54, Glendale 35--Donald Holt had 16 points and Daryl Smith added 11 for the Cavaliers (9-2). Armen Haghnazarian scored 22 for Glendale.

Royal 80, Littlerock 25--Nick Flannagan had 21 points and three Highlander players added 11.

Sylmar 68, Sand Point (Ida.) 58--Jerimiah Turner had 19 points and seven assists. Robert Valentine added 16 points and six assists for Sylmar (5-5).

Hart 63, Verdugo Hills 36--Cory Johnson scored 16 points for the Indians (8-3), who played their first game in their new gymnasium. Andrew Reagan led the Dons (1-10) with 17 points.

In the Ventura tournament:

Buena 60, Bakersfield Centennial 58--Center Ian Boys made a 10-foot, fall-away shot from the baseline with 31 seconds left to give the Bulldogs (5-3) the victory. Boys, who scored the last five points for Buena, finished with 15. Guard Ryan Fay scored 18.

Ventura 78, Granada Hills 70--The Cougars (5-4) made 12 of 13 free throws in the fourth quarter. Christian Gallagher scored 12 of his 29 points in the fourth quarter, and Ventura outscored the Highlanders (5-5), 25-13, in the final period. Leon Pimky led Granada Hills with 19 points.

Calabasas 48, Crespi 47--Louay Keilani made a three-point shot from the left wing with 14 seconds to play for the Coyotes (9-3).

Ryan Hill’s putback of a missed shot gave the Celts (3-5) a 47-45 lead with 30 seconds left.

Agoura 65, Highland 58--Forward John Barry scored 23 points while Marcus Helfman added 20 points to lead the Chargers (3-5).

Highland (3-9) was led by Mike Paul, who scored 25 points.

In the Santa Paula tournament:

Newbury Park 89, Canyon 64--Daniel Bobik had 27 points and Mike Bowers scored 24 for the Panthers (7-4) in the Santa Paula tournament. Steve Eernisse scored 37 points for Canyon.

Oxnard 103, San Marino 43--Sophomore Damien Tafoya scored 19 points and sophomore Jacob Rogers had 18 points and nine rebounds for Oxnard (5-2).

In other tournaments:

Santa Clara 56, San Mateo 55--Nick Jones had 20 points and 12 rebounds to help the Saints (5-0) in the Marin County tournament.

Oak Park 71, Arcadia 58--Randy Gastwirt had 26 points to help the Eagles (6-2) in the Covina tournament. John Murphy added 15 points and 19 rebounds.

Crescenta Valley 56, Buena Park 48--Andrius Raguskas had 20 points and Alex Tima added 14 points and 11 rebounds for the Falcons (6-4) in the Anaheim Canyon tournament.

St. Francis 70, Garden Grove 49--Anthony Johnson scored 27 points and had 12 rebounds as the Golden Knights (8-2) coasted in the Brea Olinda tournament.

Anton Cunningham added 23 points for St. Francis, which has won eight of its last nine games.

Channel Islands 72, Mt. Carmel 55--Bernabe Simon scored 24 points for the Raiders in the Mt. Carmel tournament.

Las Vegas 86, Westlake 43--Ian Markham scored 17 points for the Warriors (5-5), who were routed by the No. 2-seed team at the Las Vegas tournament.

Moorpark 61, Thousand Oaks 52--The Musketeers hit 11 of 19 free throws in the fourth quarter at the Santa Barbara tournament. Kevin Lawrence had 25 points and Keith Donahue added 13 for Moorpark (8-4).

Josh Armour led Thousand Oaks with 23 points.

Montclair Prep 72, Bosco Tech 47--Rocky Steryo had 25 points for the Mounties (5-3) in the La Salle tournament.
