Boat Accident Linked to Weight Imbalance

Share

Coast Guard investigators believe that a weight imbalance caused Thursday’s boating accident off the coast of Rancho Palos Verdes, in which rescuers picked up a Long Beach man from the side of a capsized motorboat but were unable to save its owner.

Water began rushing over the stern of the 21-foot vessel as Rossmoor real estate broker Jim Holmes, 56, and passenger Larry Schaffer, a 55-year-old aerospace worker, were trying to hoist the anchor, Coast Guard Lt. Cmdr. Pete Basil said Friday.

“We believe that the combination of weight distribution in the back of the boat and water coming over the stern caused the boat to capsize,” Basil said.
