DUIs and Accidents Fewer This Christmas

The number of traffic accidents and arrests for driving under the influence in Ventura County during the Christmas holiday dropped this year compared with 1995, according to a California Highway Patrol report issued Friday.

Seven traffic accidents, including two injury wrecks, were recorded between 6 p.m. on Christmas Eve and midnight on Christmas Day, a 30-hour period.

During that time, four people were arrested for driving under the influence in areas patrolled by the CHP.

By comparison, during a 78-hour period that included Christmas Day and the adjoining weekend in 1995, 36 accidents, including a fatal one, and 34 arrests for driving under the influence were reported. The figures represent a decrease in accidents and arrests even when accounting for last year’s longer monitoring period. Good weather probably contributed to the low number of accidents on Christmas Day.
