Mater Dei Comeback Falls Short

Manhattan (N.Y.) Rice held off Mater Dei by scoring the game’s last four points to upset the Monarchs, 48-45, in the semifinals of the Delaware Slam Dunk to the Beach National Invitational on Saturday in Lewes, Del.

Mater Dei is ranked third in the nation by USA Today.

Rice led early in the fourth quarter, 39-30, but the Monarchs (11-2) fought back and took a 44-42 lead on a layup by Tom Lippold with 2 minutes 52 seconds left in the game. The layup came after Lippold’s own steal.

Anthony Glover, the game’s leading scorer with 23 points, made two free throws with 1:02 left to give Rice a 46-45 lead.

Kevin Augustine had a chance to give the Monarchs the lead again with 14.8 seconds left, but missed three free throws.

After Rice made a free throw to increase its lead to 47-45, Augustine again had a chance to tie the score, but was called for charging with seven seconds left.

Lippold was Mater Dei’s leading scorer with 16 points. Augustine finished with 15 points.

In the Beachball tournament:

Hunter Huss (N.C.) 54, Woodbridge 32--Woodbridge (8-3) made 10 of 33 shots and had only three players score, as the Warriors were outscored in the second half, 31-10.

William Stovall made three three-pointers in first quarter and scored 21 points in the game for Woodbridge. Chris Burgess scored 10 points and Brandon Beeson scored eight for the Warriors. Hunter Huss shot 50% from the field and Kris Lang scored 19 of his 21 points in the second half.

In the Brea Olinda Tournament:

Brea Olinda 81, La Canada St. Francis 35--Chris McMillan scored 24 points and Sean Wink finished with 23 for Brea Olinda (9-3). Jason Skrifvars also pulled down 21 rebounds for Brea. Anthony Johnson scored 21 points for La Canada St. Francis.

Troy 63, Monterey (Australia) 51--Troy advanced to Monday’s final as Jerry Inzunza scored 21 points and teammate David Sun had 17.

In the Bullhead City tournament:

El Toro 73, Mojave (Ariz.) 56--Fabrizio Mendiola scored a game-high 31 points and Mark Wulfemeyer had nine points and 14 rebounds to lead eighth-ranked El Toro (11-3).

In the Canyon tournament:

El Dorado 42, Fullerton 40--Ryan Tenpas led all scorers with 16 points for El Dorado in the semifinal game. It was close all the way through with El Dorado leading 23-20 at the half.

Loara 45, Canyon 41--Will Hall had 16 points and Obaid Popal added 11 for Loara (9-4). Aly Goodman finished with 17 points. Loara will play El Dorado for the championship at 8 p.m. Monday at Canyon High.

In the Century Tournament:

Century 68, Santa Ana Valley 46--Terrail Zoller made 13 of 19 field goals as Century advanced to the championship final. Zoller finished with 29 points and 12 rebounds for the Centurions (8-5).

Sonora 66, Cypress 42--Ben Jones scored 18 points as Sonora defeated Cypress in the semifinals. Jimmy Landry scored 11 points for the Raiders (12-0). Travis Weaver scored 14 points for Cypress (8-4).

In the Daily Pilot Tournament:

Estancia 61, Edison 53--Selwyn Mansell scored 28 points as Estancia defeated Edison in pool play. The Eagles (9-4) play Esperanza in the championship game at 7:30 p.m. Monday.

Dimitri Karnezis scored 26 points for Edison (7-5).

In the Katella tournament:

Katella 64, Torrance 34--Katella (9-3) led, 34-10, at halftime, outscoring Torrance, 16-0, in the second quarter, to advance to the championship against Torrance Bishop Montgomery.

Joe Barraza scored 15 points and Kenny Moreno scored 14 points for the Knights.

In the St. Louis (Hawaii) Tournament:

La Quinta 58, Santa Rosa Cardinal Newman 48--Scott Ogilvie scored 39 points for La Quinta.

In the Santa Barbara tournament:

Bolsa Grande 78, Santa Maria Righetti 69 (OT)--Duc Nguyen scored 42 points, 24 in the second half, and helped Bolsa Grande rally for a victory in a pool-play game.

Bolsa Grande (5-8) trailed by 14 points after three quarters and by 10 with about four minutes left in regulation.

In the Santa Maria Tournament:

Tustin 50, Goleta Dos Pueblos 49--Ray Hobbs hit a three-pointer with three seconds to help Tustin advance to the championship game in the Santa Maria Tournament. Will Smith scored 15 points and Ryan Earl had 14 for the Tillers (9-3).
