Rhonda Windham, a former USC basketball standout, was named Monday as general manager of the Lakers’ team in the Women’s National Basketball Assn., which will begin play on June 21.

John Buss was named president of the club.

Windham has spent the last seven years on the Lakers’ public relations staff. She played on USC’s NCAA title teams of 1983 and ’84.

Buss, son of Laker owner Jerry Buss, has several years of experience in professional sports, beginning with World Team Tennis in the 1970s and most recently with the Lazers of the Major Indoor Soccer League.

Buss will oversee all operations of the Lakers’ WNBA franchise, including marketing, promotion and public relations ventures.

Windham will work in conjunction with him in the day-to-day operations.

On Wednesday, the team expected to announce another USC alumnae, Lisa Leslie, has been assigned to it, along with one other of 16 premier players signed by the WNBA.

A nickname and logo will be announced in about two weeks.
