Exhibition Is Katz Redux

Share

After running a gallery in Los Angeles for more than 11 years, I am not surprised by the short attention span and memory of the art public. I am, however, puzzled by the usually well-informed David Pagel’s reference to Alex Katz’s current exhibition as “the artist’s solo gallery debut in L.A.” (“Seeing the Light With Exquisite Ease,” Jan. 23). Long, long ago, in December 1989, I exhibited Alex’s new large paintings at my gallery on Robertson and again in June 1991 mounted a survey of Katz’s small paintings at my gallery in Santa Monica. The latter show was reviewed in The Times by Kristine McKenna on June 11, 1991. The Hoffmann show is not Katz’s debut in L.A., but in fact my shows were.
