Chavez Scores as El Modena Tops Orange

John Chavez’s goal in the first half proved to be the winner as unranked El Modena defeated fourth-ranked Orange, 2-1 in a Century League boys’ soccer game Friday at Orange.

David Higgins scored first for El Modena (11-2-3, 4-1-1). Orange is 16-3-3, 3-3.

In another Century League game:

Villa Park 2, Foothill 0--Hugo Hernandez scored in the first half and Antonio Vasquez added one in the second half for Villa Park (8-7-2, 1-4). Paul Mammarella had nine saves.

In the Empire League:

Kennedy 3, Century 2--Kennedy, down two players because of red cards, managed to score the winner on an unassisted goal by John Nitta in the 79th minute. Abe Shakolas tied the score for Kennedy (8-6-1, 2-4) midway through the second half.

In the Freeway League:

Sonora 2, Fullerton 2 (OT)--Sonora’s Nathan Ballard scored with 18 minutes left in regulation to tie the score for the Raiders (6-8-2, 3-1-2). Alejandro Barragan scored twice for Fullerton (6-8-3, 2-2-2).

Sunny Hills 1, La Habra 0 (OT)--Nick Albert scored the winning goal four minutes into overtime for Sunny Hills (9-8-3, 5-0-1).

Geoff Wrenn had four saves and posted his third shutout of the season.

In the Golden West League:

Santa Ana 2, Ocean View 1--Hector Candelas scored both goals on assists from Juan Reyes to help top-ranked Santa Ana (14-0-4, 5-0-2) remain the only undefeated team in the county.

Servite 3, Tustin 0--Keith Buckley, Mark Kisting and Raul Atler scored the goals for Servite (14-4-4, 3-1-2). Kisting also had an assist. Tustin is 0-12-3, 0-6-1.

In the Olympic League:

Capistrano Valley Christian 4, Downey Calvary Chapel 0--Justin Hoeppner and Jessie Barnett each scored two goals for Capistrano Valley Christian (3-8, 2-5).

Orange Lutheran 2, Cerritos Valley Christian 1--Freshman Sean Silva assisted Eric Van de Ziever on the winning goal in the 69th minute for Orange Lutheran (14-2-2, 7-0-1). Jeff Mangels scored the first goal for Orange Lutheran in the 17th minute. Shawn Vance had five saves to help Orange Lutheran extend its unbeaten streak to 11 games.

In the Pacific Coast League:

Aliso Niguel 1, Costa Mesa 0--David Smith scored 15 minutes into the game. Aliso Niguel is 8-5-5, 3-2-1.

Laguna Beach 2, University 1--Junior Spencer Herbert scored in the 39th minute and 74th minute. Dan Grey of University tied the score on a penalty kick. Laguna Beach is 12-4-2, 5-0-1.

In the South Coast League:

Capistrano Valley 3, Dana Hills 2--Chris Latini scored the winner with 10 minutes left as fifth-ranked Capistrano Valley (13-4-2, 3-2) completed a rally from a 2-0 deficit. J.P. Richmond and Zack Brennan scored the other goals for the Cougars. Dana Hills is 6-6, 4-2.

San Clemente 3, Trabuco Hills 0--Kevin Mehrens had his eighth shutout of the season as San Clemente snapped a three-game losing streak. Beau Schuster scored in the first half.

In the Sunset league:

Edison 2, Huntington Beach 0--Grant Thompson scored in the second half on a penalty kick and Dave Corbett score with five minutes remaining for Edison (4-11-2, 2-3-1).

Chris Van Reusen had his fourth shutout.

Esperanza 3, Los Alamitos 0--Scott Mitchell and Aaron Colacion each scored a goal and had an assist for second-ranked Esperanza (19-2-1, 5-1). Ryan Deschenes also scored for the Aztecs.

Fountain Valley 2, Marina 1--Adam Novak scored a goal as sixth-ranked Fountain Valley defeated Marina (11-7-3, 2-3-1). Ryan Futagaki also scored for the Barons (14-2-2, 6-0).
