‘Star Wars’ Box Office Lifts Off at Speed of Light

The 20th anniversary of the science-fiction film classic “Star Wars,” reissued last week and playing at more than 2,100 screens, was headed Saturday for more box office records.
The film brought in a record $12.4 million on its first night back in theaters, significantly more than many first-run blockbusters. It is a January-February box office record and the highest ever for a movie reissue.
Most showings reportedly drew long lines or have been sold out, and 20th Century Fox expected ticket sales Saturday to exceed Friday’s tally.
Box office watchers were estimating the film could bring in at least $35 million by tonight. A preliminary weekend report is due out today.
