A brief police chase of a spousal abuse suspect left one man dead Wednesday after the suspect’s van collided with a pickup truck, police said.

The driver of the white pickup truck was killed and his passenger injured during the incident, Police Sgt. Rick Young said.

Young said officers answered a spousal abuse call in the 100 block of South Jackson Street about 7 p.m. Wednesday. A few minutes later, about 10 blocks away from the home, officers sighted a red van they had been told the suspect was driving. Once backup arrived, the officers turned on the car’s sirens and ordered the van to pull over.

Instead the driver sped off, police said.

Seconds later, on Verdugo Road just south of Colorado Street, the van ran a red light and collided with the pickup truck, killing the driver at the scene and injuring the passenger, police said.

Young said one of the officers was about 150 feet from the crash when a huge cloud of smoke appeared.

The suspect was listed in critical condition at County-USC Medical Center, while the passenger was listed in serious condition at Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena.

No identities were given.
