Cruz Control: Local business leaders want to raise the Valley’s profile with Assembly Speaker Cruz Bustamante. So they’ve asked him to come on down to the Valley for a chat and then to be keynote speaker at an April 3 $200-a-plate dinner. . . . One thing they want to talk about is the Valley secession bills, says Valley Industry and Commerce Assn. Chairman Marvin Selter. Also on the agenda: the effect of NAFTA on the local economy. “We want to make VICA a resource,” Selter said, “to demonstrate we’re a nonpartisan advocacy group.”

Fine Print: Former Assemblyman Richard Katz no doubt could do without being reminded of his losing 1993 mayoral bid, especially by the Fair Political Practices Commission. But remind him it did and Katz agreed to pay a $4,000 fine for violating spending disclosure laws. Katz said the problem was missing information and sloppy bookkeeping on expenses. The details have since been provided. “This was a minimal fine,” he said. A spokesman for the commission agreed that Katz was in “substantial compliance” with the law.
