Tayyiba Haneef, a senior middle blocker from Laguna Hills High, has signed a letter of intent to play women’s volleyball at Long Beach State, the university announced.

Haneef, who is 6 feet 6, also plans to compete in the high jump for the 49er track and field team.

Haneef, a two-time All-Pacific Coast League volleyball player, is currently playing center on the Laguna Hills basketball team, which is ranked No. 1 in Orange County.

Joanna Fielder of Newport Harbor High has signed with Michigan to play volleyball, Sailor Coach Dan Glenn said.

Fielder, a 6-foot-2 middle blocker, was an All-Sea View League first-team selection, an All-Southern Section Division I second-team pick and helped Newport Harbor reach the Southern Section Division I-AA championship game.

Huntington Beach High will dedicate its gymnasium to former basketball coach Elmer Combs during halftime of the Oilers’ game against Los Alamitos on Feb. 14.

Combs was Huntington Beach’s coach from 1958 to 1977. He has a record of 328-121, won eight league titles and was named the league’s coach of year 13 times during his 20-year career.

Open tryouts for the Piranhas of the Arena Football League will be Feb. 23 at Chapman University. Registration begins at 9:45 a.m.

The tryout will be in two sessions starting at 10:30 a.m. and ending about 4 p.m. The first session will consist of physical testing and the second will concentrate on position drills and specific skill testing.

Participants should bring appropriate workout gear.

Registration is $30 in advance, $40 at the door. After the tryout, some players may be invited back for smaller workouts. Last season, the Piranhas had five players in training camp who had been through the open tryout.
