Harbor to Celebrate Whales’ Migration

Share

In celebration of the thousands of gray whales that migrate past Ventura County every year, Channel Islands Harbor will kick off what is hoped to be an annual six-week event celebrating their passing.

The event, dubbed “Celebration of the Whales,” will begin Saturday in the courtyard at Fisherman’s Wharf with a party commemorating the sixth anniversary of the Ventura County Maritime Museum.

Marine and whale-related exhibits, boat tours, a children’s Pirate Academy, model shipbuilding, films and photo exhibits will all be featured at the event.

Other weekend events include several craft shows, an art fair, a chowder cook-off, 10K race, educational lectures, tall ship tours and various other activities.

In addition, celebrants can take short jaunts out to sea and watch the giant cetaceans as they blow spouts and travel to their winter nursing grounds in Mexico.

The event, which ends March 23, is being coordinated by Channel Islands Harbor Marketing Inc. in partnership with the Maritime Museum and Channel Islands Hotel Properties.
