Wilson Gives Hebert a Needed Break

Share

With his team down and out, 4-0, after two periods, Coach Ron Wilson decided to spare goaltender Guy Hebert from Calgary’s relentless attack. Wilson played Mikhail Shtalenkov for only the third time in 10 games.

“I just had to get Guy out of there,” Wilson said. “I told him if we got a couple of goals and got back in the game, I’d throw him back out there.

“We’ve really ridden his back too much lately. I made a point of telling the team that after the second period.”

Hebert faced 26 shots in two periods, many from point-blank range as the Duck defense had numerous breakdowns. He stopped 31 of 32 shots in Saturday’s 2-1 victory over Edmonton.

“We wanted to keep it a nice low-scoring game like in Edmonton, but we got caught running around too much,” Hebert said. “We got a little scrambley there defensively.”

Warren Rychel suffered back spasms midway through Saturday’s 2-1 victory over Edmonton and did not return to the game. Rychel also did not play against Calgary. . . . Also not in the lineup: centers Ted Drury (broken wrist) and Kevin Todd (tendinitis in left elbow) and defensemen David Karpa (broken hand) and Nikolai Tsulygin (coach’s decision).
