Fire Damages Hotel; 11 Left Homeless

Share

An early morning fire in a residential hotel in Santa Paula caused about $15,000 in damage and left nine adults and two children homeless.

Santa Paula firefighters arrived at the Jackson Hotel about 5 a.m., where a single room was engulfed in flames, according to Capt. Dan Campos. A resident said she left a candle burning in her bedroom, and it may have caused the blaze, Campos said.

Although fire destroyed the room and its contents, damage to the rest of the hotel was slight, mostly caused by smoke and water used to quench the flames. However, firefighters discovered several safety code violations, and the hotel owner must do repairs before the facility can reopen.

The displaced residents were housed in a nearby motel.
