A 16-month-old boy was struck and killed by a car that swerved off the road, hopped a curb and struck the child’s stroller as his mother stood with him at a busy street corner, police said.

The toddler died of major injuries at Western Medical Center-Santa Ana shortly after the 5:43 p.m. incident at the southeast corner of Chapman Avenue and Hewes Street, according to Orange Police Lt. Ed Tunstall.

The names of the child and his mother, who was not injured, were not released Tuesday as authorities tried to inform other family members about the death.

An 18-year-old Trabuco Canyon woman was driving the white Honda Civic that veered off the street and collided with a street pole and the stroller, Tunstall said. The car was eastbound on Chapman approaching the Hewes intersection when it swerved sharply, Tunstall said.

An investigation was underway Tuesday to determine the cause of the accident and the speed at which the Honda was traveling, Tunstall said. There was no indication the driver had been drinking or was otherwise impaired, he said.
