Flames Not Just Kidding

Trevor Kidd made 31 saves to lead the Calgary Flames to their third consecutive victory, a 5-1 rout of the Boston Bruins at Calgary, Canada.

Jonas Hoglund, Dave Gagner, and Ronnie Stern had a goal and an assist for the Flames, whose winning streak is a season high.

Barry Richter spoiled Kidd’s shutout bid with 1:20 left in the third period. The Bruins’ winless streak stretched to four (0-3-1).

The game was the first in Calgary for former Flame Sheldon Kennedy since early January, when he attended the sentencing of his former junior coach, Graham James.

James was sentenced to 3 1/2 years in jail for sexually abusing Kennedy and another unnamed player during his tenure as coach of the Swift Current Broncos of the Western Hockey League.

Kennedy received a loud ovation when announced as Boston’s starting right wing.

N.Y. Islanders 5, Ottawa 5--Marty McInnis scored with 1:49 left in the third period at Uniondale, N.Y., as the Islanders overcame a two-goal deficit.

Travis Green scored twice for the Islanders. Bryan Smolinski and Bryan Berard each scored once.

Alexei Yashin scored twice for Ottawa. Daniel Alfredsson, Jason York and Alexandre Daigle also scored goals.

Islander defenseman Rich Pilon left the ice because of a sprain of the medial collateral ligament of his left knee. He will sit out at least a week.

Washington 5, Vancouver 2--Peter Bondra had two goals and an assist to lead the Capitals past the Canucks at Vancouver, Canada.

The victory was only the second in nine games for the injury-plagued Capitals, who were without seven players. The Canucks lost in their first game since returning from a five-game trip that included four defeats.

Alexander Mogilny had both goals for Vancouver, which has lost seven of its last 10.

Dale Hunter, Eric Charron and Todd Krygier scored the other Washington goals.
