Cal Lutheran Bruised but Unbowed in Win

Cal Lutheran set a national record by having eight batters hit by pitches during a 9-1 victory over Redlands in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener at Cal Lutheran on Friday.

The previous record for hit batters in an NCAA Division III game was six.

Redlands pitcher Corey Monroe hit seven batters in six innings.

Cal Lutheran (4-2, 1-0) was led by catcher Tom McGee, who hit two home runs and drove in three runs.

In other baseball games:

Pierce 6, San Bernardino 5--Tony Montiel had two hits, including a double, and drove in two runs for Pierce in a round-robin game of the Mt. San Antonio tournament.

In a later game, Pierce (2-5) committed six errors in a 12-1 loss to Mt. San Antonio.

Canyons 8, Orange Coast 4--Jim McNeel had two hits, including a double, and drove in three runs for Canyons (8-1) in an Orange Coast tournament game at Orange Coast.

Rick Embrecht (2-0) pitched 7 1/3 innings, allowing eight hits.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Antelope Valley 117, Barstow 96--John Burrell scored 32 points for the Marauders (25-4, 6-0) in a Foothill Conference Northern Division game at Barstow.

Jonathan George had 19 points for Antelope Valley, ranked No. 2 in the state.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Cal Lutheran 87, Occidental 53--Brandie Murrish recorded a triple-double with 21 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists to lead the Regals in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Assn. Conference game at Occidental.

Evi Orologas scored 23 points, including 18 in the first half, to lead the Regals.

Murrish’s triple-double was the first of the season for Cal Lutheran.

Santa Clara 65, Pepperdine 64--Angie White missed a free throw with five seconds to play in a West Coast Conference game at Santa Clara and the Waves (13-10, 5-6) lost to the Broncos for the second time this week. White finished with 16 points.

SWIMMING

Pacific Collegiate Swim Conference Championships--Jennifer Antimarino of Pepperdine won the 500-yard freestyle in 5:01.15 at Belmont Plaza in Long Beach.

After two days of competition, the Pepperdine women’s team is in third place with 148 points and the Cal State Northridge women’s team in fourth with 120. The Matador men’s team is in fourth place with 102 points.

MEN’S TENNIS

Pepperdine 6, UC Irvine 1--Simon Aspelin swept Steve Tallakson at No. 1 singles, 6-4, 6-1, to pace the Waves (6-1) in a nonconference match.
