Riverside Holds On to Upset First-Place Irvine Valley in Men’s Basketball

Irvine Valley’s Damian Raibon missed a three-point attempt with five seconds remaining and Riverside held on to upset the first-place Lasers, 76-73, in an Orange Empire Conference men’s basketball game at Irvine Valley College.

Riverside’s Michael Sutton made a three-pointer in the final minute to give his team a 74-73 lead and John Betham then made two free throws with 12 seconds left to stretch the lead to three.

Daryl Todd led Irvine Valley (23-7, 10-2) with 19 points and 10 rebounds.

In other conference games:

Cypress 71, Rancho Santiago 68--Cypress scored the first seven points of the second half and was able to hold off Riverside for the victory. Willie Allen scored 21 points for the Chargers (13-14, 5-7). Teammate Kevin Morris had 13 points and Derrick Watkins had 11 points for Cypress.

Lohnnie Tape scored 25 points for Rancho Santiago (14-13, 3-9).

Golden West 87, Orange Coast 75--Jacy Armbruster had 33 points and 14 rebounds as Golden West defeated Orange Coast. Teammate Ray Jimmerson had 20 points for the host Rustlers (8-20, 3-9).

Brian Fracalosy scored 27 points and David Downs had 17 points and 12 rebounds for Orange Coast (12-16, 3-9).

In Orange Empire Conference women’s basketball:

Irvine Valley 72, Riverside 45--Heather Cunningham scored 20 points for host Irvine Valley (20-6, 7-1).

Rancho Santiago 66, Cypress 49--Pauline McGee had 19 points and 13 rebounds to lead Rancho Santiago (18-8, 5-5). Becky Salvatierre had 16 points and six assists and Antoinette Thompson scored 15 for Rancho Santiago.

In the Casey Stengel baseball tournament:

Rancho Santiago 7, Bakersfield 4--Erik Secoda was two for five with three RBIs and Kevin Duck hit his third home run of the season, driving in three runs for Rancho Santiago (8-1).

Saddleback 12, Los Angeles Valley 1--Kirk Bolling hit three homers and a double, drove in seven runs and scored four for Saddleback (8-0). Kyle Kane also homered and drove in two runs for the Gauchos.

In the Cypress-Coast Classic baseball tournament:

Canyons 8, Orange Coast 4--Chad Johnson hit his fifth home run and Craig Ritter was two for three with an RBI and a run scored for the Pirates.

Cypress 23, Treasure Valley (Ore.) 2--Randy Case was five for six with three RBIs and five runs scored for Cypress (10-2).

Golden West 14, Sequoias 9--Ken Sundstrom, who was five for five with three RBIs, hit a three-run home run and Josh Roberts, who was three for five with four RBIs, hit a three-run triple en route to a 10-run fourth inning for Golden West (7-2).

In nonconference softball:

Irvine Valley 7, San Diego City 4--Tami Harris hit a grand slam in the third inning for Irvine Valley (7-2). Welch also had a double.

Orange Coast 15, San Bernardino 14--Molly Sinclair scored the winning run for Orange Coast (3-0) on a fielding miscue.
