Days before she was scheduled to undergo surgery for a benign brain tumor, actress Elizabeth Taylor was honored Sunday night at a star-studded Hollywood gala designed both as a celebration of her 65th birthday and as an AIDS fund-raiser.

Taylor, dressed in a green gown and coat, walked along a purple carpet into the Pantages Theatre hand in hand with singer Michael Jackson, a longtime friend. Taylor is the godmother of Jackson’s newborn son.

The audience watched never-before-seen footage of the actress’ life, and a career that began at age 9 and garnered best actress Academy Awards for “Butterfield 8” and “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?”

The black-tie benefit raised more than $1 million for the Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation, which distributes money for AIDS research and treatment.

A block of Hollywood Boulevard was renamed Elizabeth Taylor Way on Sunday in honor of her birthday celebration, the actual date of which is Feb. 27.
