Brethren Christian Coasts to Victory

Brethren Christian jumped to a 15-point lead in the first quarter and went on to defeat Burbank Providence, 85-48, in a Southern Section Division IV-A wild-card game Wednesday at Brethren Christian.

Brethren Christian (14-12) had four players score in double figures. Junior forward Jacob Brown paced the Warriors with 19 points and nine rebounds.

Senior guard Dan Muilenburg added 14 points, including four three pointers and six assists. Senior forward Jonathon Rouwenhorst scored 11 points and senior guard Jay Christensen had 10 points.

The Warriors created several easy scoring opportunities as their defense forced 25 turnovers. Brethren Christian, which held opponents to 45 points a game during league play, didn’t allow Burbank Providence (13-10) to score a field goal until 1 minute 30 seconds left in the first quarter. By then, the score was, 14-1.

Bobby Chalermsopone scored 17 of his 19 points, including four three pointers, in the second and third quarters and Jon Neri scored 12 points for Burbank Providence, of the Liberty League.

Brethren Christian advances to play at Chino Hills Boys’ Republic at 7:30 p.m. Friday in the first round.
