Dineen Gets Whalers Going as Flyers Miss Out in Tie

Kevin Dineen scored a pair of goals as the Hartford Whalers rallied for a 2-2 tie with the Flyers on Wednesday at Philadelphia.

Philadelphia was awarded three power plays in the third period, including one that began with 2:32 remaining, but couldn’t convert. The Flyers have only seven goals in their last 69 power plays The game marked the return of Philadelphia captain Eric Lindros, who sat out two games because of a strained lower back.

Hartford, behind slumping goalie Jason Muzzatti, snapped a three-game road losing streak.

John LeClair and Petr Svoboda had second-period goals less than a minute apart for the Flyers.

New Jersey 1, N.Y. Rangers 1--Adam Graves scored his NHL-high fifth game-tying goal to give the Rangers their second straight tie with the Devils at New Jersey.

Steve Thomas scored for the second consecutive game as the Devils’ extended their team-record unbeaten streak to 12 games (6-0-6). Martin Brodeur had 22 saves in stretching his personal unbeaten streak to 13 games (8-0-5).

Wayne Gretzky’s goal-scoring drought reached 21 games, longest of his career.

Detroit 4, Calgary 0--Chris Osgood made 28 saves for his fifth shutout of the season and Tomas Sandstrom scored two goals as the Red Wings snapped the Flames’ six-game unbeaten streak at Detroit.

Edmonton 6, Toronto 5--Mariusz Czerkawski had three goals and an assist as the Oilers raced to a four-goal lead before hanging on to win at Edmonton.
