With Dad’s Health Improving, Woods Will Play at Riviera
Tiger Woods committed to play in next week’s Nissan Open, less than two days after his father underwent triple coronary bypass surgery.
Woods, 21, last played a PGA Tour event when he tied for second at the AT&T; Pebble Beach Pro-Am on Feb. 2. After that, he won a tournament in Thailand and last weekend finished tied for eighth at the Australian Masters.
Earl Woods, 64, was moved from intensive care to a private room Friday at UCLA Medical Center. He underwent surgery Wednesday afternoon.
The operation was performed by Hillel Laks, a cardiothoracic specialist.
A hospital spokesperson said the elder Woods was doing well and might be able to go home by the end of next week. Earl Woods, who collapsed at the Tour Championship last October, underwent a quadruple bypass 10 years ago.
Woods waited until after his father’s operation to commit to the Nissan Open, where he played his first pro event as a 16-year-old amateur.
The $1.4-million Nissan Open begins Thursday at Riviera Country Club.
