From Staff and Wire Reports

California guard Ed Gray had a school-record 48 points Saturday, but there was no euphoria over his performance.

Gray, the Pacific 10’s leading scorer at 23 points a game, suffered a broken left foot that will end his season after missing a dunk with 1:14 remaining in the Golden Bears’ 89-87 loss to Washington State at Pullman, Wash.

The loss dropped Cal, 19-7 overall and 10-5 in the Pacific 10, 1 1/2 games behind first-place UCLA. Washington State is 12-14 and 4-10.

Gray scored 38 points in the second half and 21 of the last 22 for the Golden Bears in breaking John Coughran’s previous school record of 47 against Utah State in 1972.

Other accomplishments for Gray were:

--The sixth-best scoring total in Pacific 10 history, and the most since Gary Payton of Oregon State scored 58 against USC in 1990.

--The most points against Washington State since Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, then known as Lew Alcindor, had 61 in 1967.

--The highest total by a Division I player this season.

Gray made 14 of 26 shots, while his teammates made 11 of 35.

The Golden Bears compiled a favorable free-throw advantage for a visiting team, attempting 28 more than the Cougars in outscoring them, 31-10, from the line. Gray made 16 of 17 free throws, with the last two--coming after he was fouled on the missed dunk--tying the score at 87-87.

Forward Carlos Daniel’s driving layup put Washington State ahead with three seconds left and Cal guard Prentice McGruder missed a shot at the buzzer.

Guard Isaac Fontaine had 26 points and became Washington State’s all-time scorer at 1,912, breaking the previous record of 1,894 held by Steve Puidokas from 1973-77.

No. 13 Arizona 74, Oregon State 64--Forward Michael Dickerson made 12 of 19 shots and had 29 points to lead the Wildcats (17-7, 9-5) to their 15th consecutive victory over the Beavers (7-17, 3-12) at Corvallis, Ore.

Dickerson became the 27th Arizona player to top 1,000 points.

Oregon State’s freshman guard Corey Benjamin made his first eight shots and had 26 points. The Beavers, though, had 22 turnovers and missed 15 of 33 free throws.

Washington 75, No. 20 Stanford 61--Center Todd MacCulloch’s first two shots were blocked, but he finished with 24 points and 11 rebounds as the Huskies (15-8, 8-6) kept their NCAA tournament hopes alive with the victory over the Cardinal (16-7, 9-6) at Seattle.

Stanford point guard Brevin Knight, averaging 16.3 points, scored eight on three-of-16 shooting. Center Tim Young also was not a factor again as he had six points and three rebounds in 13 minutes.

Oregon 85, Arizona State 77--Point guard Kenya Wilkins had a season-high 24 points for the Ducks (16-8, 7-8) against the Sun Devils (10-16, 2-12) at Eugene, Ore.
