Re “Heavy Metal Spoof Sinks Pat Boone’s Show,” Feb. 20:

The Trinity Broadcasting Network viewers (I’m sure) did not even listen to Pat Boone’s album, and proceeded to label it as evil, without having given it a chance. For us true fans of rock ‘n’ roll and heavy metal, it is little more than a joke, so clean and polished it sounds.

As for Boone’s look at the American Music Awards, it was nothing more than a publicity stunt (he was standing next to a “groomed” Alice Cooper, for crying out loud!), and my friends and I got a kick out of it. Mr. Boone: Rock on!

As a born-again Christian, I too was somewhat shocked to see Boone dressed in heavy metal attire at the recent music awards. The open chest, tattoos, dog collar and earrings were confusing to say the least. Did he switch over to the dark side of the music industry?

While I am not convinced that Boone’s tactics were the most appropriate way to reach out to the heavy metal industry, I do not, however, believe he has left his Christian faith.

I see Pat’s actions as a result of his passionate desire to see the individuals in this part of the music industry get right with God. Boone has been in the music industry for many years. His continued exposure to the demonic goings on embraced by much of the secular heavy metal industry has to challenge him. Before we Christians crucify Boone for his attempt to reach the heavy metal industry, let us try to understand his motivation and allow him some slack.

Boone has fun interpreting heavy metal classics utilizing fake tattoos, dark glasses and leather. His record sales are sinking. TBN’s Jan Crouch interprets the Bible utilizing fake hair, tears and more makeup than Alice Cooper ever dreamed of slapping on. Donations to her TBN are pouring in. Which one of these personalities is truly acting?

Boone a bare-nippled apostate? I just love a serious theological dispute.
