A man who had apparently stopped his car at the scene of an earlier traffic accident was struck and critically injured by a passing car as he was walking across Culver Drive, police said Sunday.

Michael Richard Trueblood, 21, of Irvine suffered massive head injuries in the accident about 6:25 p.m. Saturday in the southbound lanes of Culver. Police said he was hit by a 1987 Toyota driven by a 17-year-old Irvine resident.

Trueblood was in an area where a stalled Ford Mustang had been struck by other vehicles, according to police.

The Toyota driver told officers he tried to swerve but hit Trueblood on the right side of his car. He was not cited, police said, but the accident remains under investigation.

Trueblood was taken to Western Medical Center-Santa Ana, where his condition Sunday was listed as critical.
