Coombes Throws Perfect Game, Titans Sweep

Donna Coombes pitched a perfect game, then came back to get the victory in relief as Cal State Fullerton swept Purdue in a doubleheader at the Florida softball tournament in Gainesville.

Coombes had four strikeouts as Fullerton won the opening game, 1-0. She gave up two hits and struck out two in 4 1/3 innings of relief to get the victory as Fullerton won the second game, 6-1.

Bevan Trueblood had a run-scoring single in the 1-0 victory and Dara Marzolo had two doubles and drove in two runs in the 6-1 victory.

In the Campbell/Cartier softball tournament:

Long Beach State 3, Stanford 1--Shari Shultz had three hits, including a run-scoring triple, and scored a run for Long Beach (13-5), which went 5-2 in the round-robin tournament and was declared the champion.

Tammy Dietrich (7-2) pitched five innings, giving up four hits and an unearned run and was selected the tournament’s most valuable player. She was 3-1 in the tournament.

Amanda Adams had an RBI double for Long Beach.

In Big West Conference women’s basketball:

UC Irvine 75, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 63--Leticia Oseguera scored a game-high 20 points and had 14 rebounds for UC Irvine. With 12 minutes 46 seconds left and the scored tied, 39-39, UC Irvine’s Megan Stafford made a three-pointer and UC Irvine led the rest of the way.

Shannon Andres finished with 19 points, making 10 of 11 free throws for UC Irvine (13-12, 8-6 in conference). UC Irvine made 23 of 32 free throws in the game.

In other Big West Conference games:

Pacific 58, Long Beach State 50--Kate McAllister scored a game-high 25 points for host Pacific (8-16, 7-6). She also made 11 of 14 free throws and had a game-high 12 rebounds. Allison Luckey scored all of her points on free throws, making 10 of 12 for Pacific.

Kesha Wade had 13 points for Long Beach State (9-15, 6-7).

UC Santa Barbara 97, Cal State Fullerton 80--Kristin Sigg scored 21 points and Andrea Thieme had 15 for visiting Cal State Fullerton.

Erin Alexander made only three of 12 shots from the field but was 14 of 16 from the line to finish with a team-high 21 points for UC Santa Barbara.

In the Long Beach State baseball classic:

USC 7, Long Beach State 1--Seth Etherton (4-0) of Dana Hills High pitched a three-hitter with 10 strikeouts and didn’t walk a batter for USC (16-3).
