Daigneault Suspension Draws Comparisons

Share

Last season, Baltimore Oriole second baseman Roberto Alomar spit at an umpire. He will serve a five-game suspension this season. The Bulls’ Dennis Rodman headbutted a referee and got six games. The Lakers’ Nick Van Exel gave a referee a forearm shove and got seven games.

This week, the Ducks’ J.J. Daigneault accidentally hit a referee with his stick, then deliberately swung and missed--and got 10 games.

“It’s a little extreme, giving J.J. 10 games,” said Daigneault’s agent, Ron Salcer. “It’s not like spitting in somebody’s face or headbutting.”

Defenseman Dmitri Mironov’s reaction was typical of the sentiments among the Ducks. “Are you kidding me?” Mironov said. “Ten games, it’s too much.”
