Work Begins on Housing Complex for Mentally Disabled

A Community of Friends, which develops permanent affordable housing for the mentally disabled, is building a housing complex in South-Central Los Angeles.

The structure will be built in the 9000 block of South Figueroa Street and will provide 39 studio apartments for low- to moderate-income people with mental disabilities and illnesses, said Executive Director J. Monique Lawshe.

“The fact that they are living in an apartment fosters independence,” Lawshe said. Many of the developer’s clients will come to the new housing program from temporary and emergency housing, she added.

The building now at the site houses Mental Health Professionals Inc., which offers mental health care services to the community. The organization will move into the new structure, which is to be completed by the end of this year.
