Fleury the Spark as Flames Squeeze Past Montreal, 3-2

Theoren Fleury scored his first goal in 12 games and added an assist to lead the Calgary Flames to a 3-2 victory over the Montreal Canadiens at Calgary on Friday.

The victory pulled the Flames into a three-way tie for seventh place in the Western Conference with the Mighty Ducks and Chicago.

Fleury put Calgary ahead, 2-1, with 15 seconds left in the first period, flipping a rebound over sprawled Montreal goaltender Jocelyn Thibault.

Jonas Hoglund and German Titov also scored for Calgary. Jarome Iginla, the NHL’s leading rookie scorer, added two assists for Calgary.

Ottawa 4, New York Islanders 1--Alexei Yashin scored two goals to lead the Senators to victory over the Islanders at Kanata, Ontario.

Yashin reached the 30-goal mark, tying his own club record for goals in a season established in 1993-94.

San Jose 3, Hartford 2--Jeff Friesen scored with 2:18 remaining to give the Sharks a victory over the Whalers at Hartford, Conn.

After Doug Bodger’s slap shot went off Whaler goaltender Jason Muzzatti and into the left circle, Friesen scored on the rebound to give the Sharks their first victory in four games.

Geoff Sanderson scored both goals for Hartford, which lost for the first time in five games.
