A tow truck driver was cited Saturday after he hit a car, causing a chain-reaction crash that involved six other vehicles and backed up traffic for several hours, police said.

Chad Preston McComb, 22, of Huntington Beach was cited for rear-ending a car and triggering the crash, said Costa Mesa Traffic Sgt. Les Gogerty. Two people were hurt, one suffering a concussion, and the other neck and back pain and some bruising, he said.

The crash occurred at 4 p.m. at Adams and Placentia avenues. McComb was heading east on Adams Avenue, approaching the intersection, when he failed to notice the car in front of him had stopped, Gogerty said.

“Traffic was stopped for a red light, which he didn’t notice,” Gogerty said. “He tried to stop but couldn’t.”

In all, eight vehicles, including the tow truck, were damaged. Eastbound Adams Avenue was shut down, and only one of three lanes on the opposite side was open, Gogerty said.
