Seles Pulls Out of Indian Wells Event
The field for the State Farm Evert Cup took another hit Tuesday, as Monica Seles withdrew because of a broken finger in her right hand.
Seles, who is left-handed, broke a bone in her index finger last December and has not played on the tour since, although she has maintained her ranking at No. 6.
A tournament spokesman said Seles, who was scheduled to arrive at the Indian Wells site Tuesday afternoon, never arrived, but a fax did--informing the tournament that Seles would not be participating. Seles was entered in last year’s tournament but also withdrew because of injury.
Seles has been spending time with her father, who is being treated at the Mayo Clinic for stomach cancer, which he successfully battled in 1993.
Defending champion Steffi Graf pulled out last month because of a knee injury.
