Valley 78, Compton 73--Gianandrea Marcaccini scored 20 points and Leon Brisport had 12 points and seven rebounds to pace Valley in overtime at Valley.
Marcaccini, a freshman forward from Crespi High, and Brisport each tallied four points in overtime.Brisport also had two rebounds and drew a key charging foul by Jaquay Walls with 34 seconds to go in overtime.
The Monarchs (25-9) advanced to a third-round game Saturday against L.A. City (26-6), the regional’s top-seeded team.
Compton trailed, 66-64, in the waning seconds of regulation, but Walls (15 points) sent the game into overtime with a jumper as time expired.
Valley clung to a 72-68 edge after a reverse layup by Marcaccini with 1:05 to go in overtime, and Compton came within 72-71 after a three-point play by Walls with 44 seconds left.
Brisport made two free throws on the Monarchs’ next possession for a 74-71 lead, and Compton was forced to foul from there. Valley converted four free throws in the last 26 seconds.
Valley’s Carlton Frasier had 12 points and 10 rebounds, Germaine Chase had 12 points and Benny Hoang had 11 points and nine assists.
Compton (16-8) got 20 points from James Tucker and 18 points and 11 rebounds from Mike Gill.
