Canyons Deep-Sixes Mission

College of the Canyons scored six runs in the bottom of the ninth to defeat Mission, 9-8, in a Western State Conference baseball game Thursday at Canyons.

Kasey Canale tied the game, 8-8, with a one-out, two-run double.

The Cougars (13-5, 3-1 conference play) scored the winning run on the same play when Canale scored on consecutive throwing errors by Mission.

Hiram Damwijk, who had a two-run single for Canyons in the ninth, was four for five with two solo home runs and four runs batted in.

Eli Albertson was four for four with four doubles and three RBIs for Mission.

Canyons reliever Brock Benson (1-0) pitched two hitless innings and struck out three.

In other baseball games:

Moorpark 2, Santa Barbara 1--Casey Vermette pitched a four-hitter to give the Raiders their first victory of the season in a nonconference game at Moorpark College.

Nate Janowicz, Tim Nykoluk and Jarrod Penwarden each had two hits for Moorpark (1-3).

Oxnard 3, Ventura 2--Jeremy Pierce lined out to center field with runners on first and third with two out in the bottom of the ninth inning, and the Condors held on in a WSC game at Oxnard.

Jack Wilson, Ruben Delgado and Pat Colburn each had run-scoring singles in the first inning for Oxnard.

Glendale 5, Pierce 4--Brett Niles had a two-run home run in the seventh inning to break a 3-3 tie for the Vaqueros (14-6, 3-1) in a WSC game at Glendale.

Pierce cut the lead to 5-4 in the ninth but stranded the tying run at third base.

Bakersfield 15, Valley 13--Ray Montenegro had three hits and three RBIs, and Steve Guerrero had two hits and drove in four runs, but the Monarchs fell in a WSC game at Valley.

Valley (1-14-3, 0-4) lost an early 5-1 lead and trailed, 14-13, when the Monarchs loaded the bases with two out in the eighth inning.

Bakersfield relief pitcher C.J. Martin ended the threat by getting Dylan Forman to ground out.

SOFTBALL

Bakersfield 6, Moorpark 3--Danielle Stines hit a two-run home run in the first inning and Corinne Long and Colleen McDonald each had two hits, but the Raiders (7-10, 1-1) fell in a WSC game at Moorpark.

Pierce 7, Cuesta 3--Jenaye Brown had two home runs and two RBIs for the Brahmas (8-8, 2-0) in a WSC game at Pierce.

Mirage Galaviz had three hits, including two doubles for Pierce.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Midwestern State 59, The Master’s 47--Kasey Downer scored 14 points and Elizabeth Hansell added 13 but the Mustangs lost to the Indians, from Wichita Falls, Texas, in the first round of the NAIA Southwest Region Independents tournament at Texas Wesleyan University in Fort Worth.
