Bondra, Juneau Pace Capitals, 6-3

Peter Bondra ended his slump with four goals, and Joe Juneau had four assists and the Washington Capitals beat the Colorado Avalanche, 6-3, Thursday at Landover, Md.

Bondra had been scoreless in the past six games, but he became the first player this season to get a hat trick against the Avalanche and the first to score four goals against the team since November 1993.

The Avalanche had won three in a row and nine of its last 11.

New York Islanders 5, Boston 2--At Uniondale, N.Y., Claude Lapointe and Marty McInnis each had a goal and an assist, and the Islanders won the battle between the two worst teams in the Eastern Conference.

Phoenix 5, Tampa Bay 0--Goalie Nikolai Khabibulin made 30 saves, and Mike Gartner scored goals against two Lightning goaltenders at Tampa.

San Jose 2, Ottawa 0--Viktor Kozlov scored on a power play in the first period and Tony Granato scored a third-period goal to the lead the Sharks at San Jose.

NHL Notes

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman issued a nine-page opinion Thursday in support of his decision to uphold Mighty Duck defenseman J.J. Daigneault’s 10-game suspension for abuse of an official.

Bettman said he rejected the appeal because Daigneault couldn’t prove he didn’t deliberately swing his stick or failed to realize it was referee Don Koharski he had bumped in a game Feb. 23.

New Jersey Devil center Doug Gilmour, struck in the face with a puck Wednesday, will miss two games because of bruises around his left eye.

San Jose Shark defenseman Al Iafrate had surgery to repair a herniated disk.
