BOYS’ DIVISION II

Mater Dei (23-1-3) vs. San Bernardino San Gorgonio (25-3-2), Cerritos Gahr HS, Saturday, noon

The top-seeded Monarchs are shooting for their second section title in three years and they will have a much better shot if Walter Camargo can play, even a little. Camargo (13 goals, 13 assists), a senior forward with incredible ball skills, has missed the last six games with appendicitis. But Mater Dei Coach Martin Stringer said Camargo has been practicing. “He’ll try and play,” Stringer said. “He’s been running and playing with the ball and there’s been no side affects so far. It would be a great morale booster if he can go.” Midfielder Chris Hulgreen (11 goals, 14 assists), who started on the 1994 title team, has a deep bone bruise in a shin after being kicked in the first half of semifinal game against Ventura Buena. Third-seeded San Gorgonio has reached the playoffs 13 of the past 15 years and 11 of its 18 players are seniors. Senior forwards Brandon Humphries (30 goals), Mike Martinez (22 goals), Chase McIntosh (18 goals) do virtually all of the Spartans’ scoring.
