The Rolling Stones, already set to have Babyface produce tracks for their new album, are also expected to record some tracks with producers Don Was (who did their last two albums) and the Dust Brothers (who did Beck’s “Odelay”). Discussions were also held with Dr. Dre, but at this time he is not involved in the project. The Stones are convening now in L.A. to begin preliminary work at Babyface’s studio, with the album release and a tour tentatively on the boards for late summer or fall. . . .

The group 311 is going into the studio Tuesday (that’s March 11 . . . get it?) in L.A. to start work on a new album, due Aug. 5. This week also marks the 52nd straight week the band’s “311” album has been on the Billboard album chart. . . .

A Bruce Springsteen tribute album, to be titled “One Step Up,” is in the works, with E Street Band member Nils Lofgren and the Smithereens having recorded songs and John Hiatt, the BoDeans, Joe Ely, Dave Alvin and Greg Kihn working on contributions. Producers are also pursuing Bob Seger, Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne and others, and hope to get the Boss himself to designate a charity to which proceeds can be directed.
