Long Beach State Downs Loyola Marymount

J.J. Newkirk went three for six with a triple and two RBIs to lead Long Beach State to a 12-4 victory over Loyola Marymount in nonconference baseball.

Iran Barrera pitched four innings of one-hit relief as the 49ers (10-11) won for the fourth time in their last five games, scoring the last nine runs to beat the Lions (7-15) in Westchester.

Toby Sanchez contributed his second home run of the year for Long Beach, and the 49ers’ Jaron Madison and Izzy Gonzalez each drove in two runs.

In Golden State Athletic Conference baseball:

Southern California College 8, Point Loma Nazarene 6--Terrik Clark was three for four with three RBIs for SCC (15-7, 8-3). Kevin Moore hit a double and a home run for the Vanguards.

Scott Stewart had three hits for Point Loma Nazarene (4-13-1, 2-7).

In Golden State Athletic Conference softball:

Point Loma Nazarene 8-9, Concordia 3-8--Jennifer Jessen (Troy High) pitched a five-hitter in the opener, then won the second game in relief as Point Loma Nazarene (8-6, 2-0) swept the Eagles in the GSAC opener for both schools in San Diego. Alissa Carlson and Salena Goudreault each went four for six in the doubleheader to pace Concordia (10-9, 0-2).

In nonconference women’s tennis:

UC Irvine 8, Fairfield 1--UC Irvine (6-5) ended a three-match losing streak with an 8-1 victory at UCI. Leah Fisher, the Anteaters’ No. 1-seeded player, won her match against Lenka Hurton, 6-0, 6-0. Fisher’s singles record improved to 6-3.

In Mountain Pacific Sports Federation volleyball:

UC Irvine 3, UC San Diego 0--Chris Harger had 18 kills for UC Irvine, which defeated UC San Diego, 15-4, 17-16, 15-9. Kevin Dake had 53 assists for the Anteaters (4-9). Eric Mai had 20 kills for UC San Diego (5-14).
