Monroe’s Ennis No-Hits Highland

John Ennis pitched a no-hitter and Monroe High defeated Highland, 4-0, in the San Fernando baseball tournament Tuesday at Monroe.

“It wasn’t until after it all happened that they all realized, hey, we just threw a no-hitter,” Viking Coach Fred Purdith said.

Ennis had 13 strikeouts and did not allow a walk. A fifth-inning error ended Ennis’ bid for a perfect game. Monroe is 2-1.

Calabasas 5, Birmingham 1--Frank Carlisi doubled and homered for the Coyotes (3-1) in a San Fernando tournament victory over the Braves (2-1) at Calabasas. Matt Sagoian (2-0) allowed three hits and one earned run in four innings for Calabasas.

El Camino Real 11, Santa Paula 3--Raymond LeDuc’s grand slam for the Conquistadores (2-1) in the fifth inning blew open a 3-2 game in the San Fernando tournament at El Camino Real.

Hart 8, Hueneme 3--Brian Hernandez (1-0) shut out Hueneme until the fourth, by which time Hart had built a 6-0 lead in Newhall. Chris Wright and Eric Horvat each doubled for the Indians (2-1).

Santa Clara 4, Fillmore 2--Steven Long’s three-run homer lifted the Saints (1-1) at Santa Clara. Left-hander Michael Allen struck out all six batters he faced and earned a save.

San Fernando 5, Thousand Oaks 4--Dave Perry and John Smith each homered for Thousand Oaks (0-2), but the Lancers made six errors in a San Fernando tournament game.

Alemany 8, Channel Islands 6--Bill Scott, Jason Westemeir and Chris Dominique each had two hits, and Dominique had three RBIs, for the Indians (2-1) in a Westside tournament pool play game at Alemany.

Oak Park 7, Harvard-Westlake 5--Garrett Michaels hit a three-run homer in the seventh to give the Eagles (2-0) a victory at Harvard-Westlake.

Westlake 10, Granada Hills 9--Ethan East hit a two-run home run for the Warriors (3-1) in the seventh inning of a San Fernando tournament game at Westlake. Ryan Cope and Kevin Howard also homered for Westlake.

Palmdale 21, Grant 3--Corey Briggs hit for the cycle and had seven runs batted in for the Falcons (4-0) in a San Fernando tournament game at Grant.

Newbury Park 9, Crossroads 7--Danny Greene had three hits and two stolen bases for the Panthers (3-0) in a Westside tournament game at Newbury Park.

Anthony Foli hit two doubles and Jake Farrel hit one double for Newbury Park.

Agoura 6, Muir 1--David Turner had 10 strikeouts and did not allow a walk for the Chargers (2-1) in an El Segundo tournament game at Agoura.

SOFTBALL

Chatsworth 10, North Hollywood 3--Margot Nineberg hit a two-run home run for the Chancellors (2-0) in the sixth inning at Chatsworth.

Kennedy 3, Van Nuys 0--Sandra Durazo struck out 16 and allowed three singles for the Golden Cougars at Van Nuys. Cristine Garcia hit a home run for Kennedy.

Harvard-Westlake 2, Calabasas 1--Anna Russell struck out nine for the Wolverines (3-0) at Calabasas.

Reseda 16, Birmingham 1--Freshman Stephanie Yates pitched a no-hitter in her first start for the Regents at Birmingham.

Crescenta Valley 5, La Puente 0--Melinda Moulden pitched a no-hitter, recording 12 strikeouts, for the Falcons in a nonleague game at La Puente.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Kennedy d. North Hollywood, 15-9, 15-11, 15-8--Jeff Toon had 10 kills and Daniel Brookshire added six for the Golden Cougars (2-0) at Kennedy.
