Maybe Nick Rodionoff left at the right time.

The longtime Birmingham High swimming coach, who retired in January, took pride that his boys’ team hadn’t lost a dual meet in more than two decades.

But Monday, El Camino Real became the first team to beat the Braves in a dual meet since Monroe in 1972 with a 98-79 victory in a West Valley League meet at Pierce College.

“They still have a lot of fast swimmers at Birmingham,” El Camino Real Coach Dave Johnson said. “We didn’t know how long the streak was. We just know they’re always one of the best.”

Wrestlemania: Heavyweight Chad Troxler of Simi Valley, who placed third in the state wrestling finals Saturday in Stockton, set school records with 49 victories this season and 180 in his career.

Highland’s Stuart Young, who won three of five matches at the state meet, had a school-record 68 victories at 145 pounds.
